You ordered a few things from Shein, they arrived, and now something is not working out. Maybe the fit is off. Maybe the colour looks completely different from the photos. Maybe you just changed your mind. Whatever the reason, knowing exactly how the Shein return policy works before you start packing that box will save you time, money and a lot of frustration.
This guide covers every question USA shoppers ask about the Shein return policy in 2026. All facts are verified against Shein’s official US policy page updated February 2026.
What Is the Shein Return Policy?
The Shein return policy gives USA shoppers 30 days from the delivery date to send most items back. That clock starts the day your tracking status changes to Delivered, not the day you placed the order. This is the single most misunderstood part of the whole process.
If your package spent 11 days in transit before reaching your door, you still get the full 30 days starting from that delivery date. Shipping time does not eat into your return window. Open the Shein app, go to My Orders, and the exact return deadline is listed right next to each item. Use that date, not your own calculation.
To qualify, items must be unworn, unwashed, and in the same condition they arrived in. All original tags must still be attached. Trying something on at home to check the fit is fine. Wearing it out, washing it, or removing the tags disqualifies the return immediately.
✓ Holiday extensions: During major sales events, Shein sometimes extends the return window. November purchases have been returnable into early January in past years. Check your order confirmation email for any extension before assuming the standard 30 days applies.
How to Return Shein Items: Step by Step
Shein is online only. There are no physical stores to walk into, so every return starts in the app or on the website.
- Step 1. Open the Shein app or go to us.shein.com and log in to your account.
- Step 2. Go to Me, then My Orders. Find the order with the item you want to return.
- Step 3. Tap Return Item. If you cannot see this button, your 30-day window has closed.
- Step 4. Select the items and pick a return reason from the dropdown list.
- Step 5. Choose your refund method — original payment or Shein Wallet credit.
- Step 6. Download your return label or QR code. You can take the QR code to USPS or UPS without printing anything.
- Step 7. Drop off the package, keep the receipt, and wait.
💡 Before you start: Try on every item in your order before initiating any return. You only get one free label per order. Pack everything you are sending back into one box so you use that free label in a single shipment and nothing gets deducted.
How Much Does It Cost to Return to Shein?
Your first return from any single order is completely free. Shein provides a prepaid label that covers the full postage. Nothing is deducted from your refund.
After that first label, every additional return from the same order costs $7.99, deducted directly from your refund amount. A third return from the same order is another $7.99. This fee applies per shipment, not per item.
⚠️ The split shipment trap: This is where most people lose money. You buy 8 items, try on 5 and return them using your free label. Two days later you decide to return the other 3. That second package costs $7.99 even though it is from the same order. The fix is simple: wait until you have tried on and decided about every single item before you print that first label.
How Long Does a Shein Refund Take?
Once Shein’s warehouse receives and inspects your returned items, here is what to expect based on the refund method you chose:
- Shein Wallet credit: Usually processed within 24 hours of approval. The fastest option if you plan to shop on Shein again.
- Original card: 5 to 10 business days after Shein approves the return, plus an additional 1 to 5 days depending on your bank.
- PayPal: Generally faster than a regular card, usually 24 to 48 hours once Shein approves.
- Total end to end: Budget 10 to 15 days for card refunds. It can stretch longer during peak shopping seasons like Black Friday.
Original shipping fees from your original order are never refunded. Only the cost of the returned items comes back.
Shein’s refund status only updates when their warehouse physically scans your package, not when the carrier marks it delivered. If your tracking says delivered but Shein has not confirmed receipt yet, give it 3 to 5 more business days before contacting support.
What Items Cannot Be Returned?
Not every item qualifies under the Shein return policy. Shein marks non-returnable items on the product page before you buy, so always check the details section below the price before you checkout, especially for these categories:
- Lingerie and underwear — non-returnable for hygiene reasons, no exceptions
- Swimwear and bodysuits — same hygiene rules apply
- Jewellery and most accessories — generally final sale
- Opened beauty products — cannot go back once the seal is broken
- Final Sale and Flash Sale items — clearly labelled at checkout, no exceptions regardless of condition
- Customised or personalised items — not eligible unless they arrive defective
- Items with tags removed — if the tags are off, the return will be rejected at the warehouse
Damaged or Defective Items: Different Rules Apply
If something arrives damaged, defective, or completely different from what was shown on the product page, the standard 30-day return window is not your only option. Shein gives you 90 days from the order date to report a faulty item.
Contact Shein customer service as soon as you notice the problem, ideally within 24 hours of delivery. Take clear photos of the damage and the packaging before you do anything else. When you contact support, choose the reason “Item is defective or damaged” and upload the photos when prompted.
In many cases, Shein will offer a refund or replacement without even asking you to send the item back, especially for low-value products. This applies even to categories that are normally non-returnable, like opened beauty products or swimwear, if they genuinely arrive faulty.
💡 Photo everything on delivery day. Even if you plan to keep an item, take a quick photo of the package and the items when they first arrive. If something turns out to be defective later, you will already have the evidence you need.
Can You Return Shein Sale Items?
This depends entirely on how the item was listed at the time of purchase. There are two very different situations.
Regular sale items: Items that are discounted but not specifically labelled as Final Sale can be returned within the standard 30-day window with no additional restrictions. A 20% or 30% discount does not affect your return eligibility.
Final Sale and Flash Sale items: These are listed with a non-returnable notice on the product page and cannot be returned under any circumstances, regardless of condition. This includes most clearance bundles, seasonal flash deals, and anything explicitly marked as final sale at checkout.
Always scroll to the product details section before buying anything at a steep discount. Shein makes the non-returnable notice visible before you complete your purchase. Missing it is the number one reason shoppers get stuck with items they cannot send back.
Can You Return Shein Without the Original Packaging?
For clothing, you generally do not need the original plastic polybag. What matters is the condition of the item, not the bag it came in. Tags must still be attached. The piece must be unworn and undamaged. If those conditions are met, most clothing can go back without the original packaging.
That said, if you still have the polybag, include it. The barcode on the bag lets Shein’s warehouse team scan and identify your return faster, which speeds up processing time and gets your refund moving sooner.
For beauty products, accessories, and anything that came in sealed packaging, the original packaging matters a great deal. If the seal has been broken on those items, they typically cannot be returned at all, regardless of how carefully you repack them.
What Happens If You Try to Return After 30 Days?
Once your 30-day window passes, the Return Item button disappears from your order history. Requests to customer service for standard non-defective returns past the deadline are almost always declined.
The exception is defective or faulty items. As mentioned above, those have a 90-day window from the order date. If your item developed a fault or you noticed damage after the standard window closed, contact customer service with photos and explain the situation. Consumer protection rights apply regardless of a store’s posted policy.
For everything else, the 30 days is firm. The easiest way to never miss it is to check your return deadline in the Shein app as soon as your order arrives, not when you finally decide to return something.
What Happened to Shein Returns at Forever 21?
In April 2024, Shein partnered with Happy Returns to let USA shoppers drop off returns at Forever 21 stores across the country. You could walk in with your items and a QR code, hand them over without any box or label, and leave with a same-day 30% discount coupon. It was genuinely one of the most convenient return options any fast fashion brand had ever offered.
That option no longer exists. Forever 21 filed for bankruptcy and closed all of its US stores in early 2025. The drop-off partnership ended with the closures. If you have seen a social media post or YouTube video recommending the Forever 21 drop-off, that content is outdated.
For USA shoppers today, Shein works with USPS, UPS, and Happy Returns locations inside The UPS Store, Ulta Beauty and Staples. When you initiate a return in the Shein app, available drop-off locations near you will appear automatically. Use those options.
How to Track Your Shein Return
After you drop off your package, tracking the return through the Shein app is more reliable than tracking through the carrier’s website. Here is why: the carrier will mark the package as delivered to Shein’s warehouse, but Shein’s system only updates once their team physically scans it in. There can be a gap of 2 to 3 days between the carrier scan and the Shein scan.
To check your return status, open the Shein app, go to My Orders, find the relevant order, and look for the Return and Refund Record section. This shows you whether your return is in transit, received, under inspection, or approved.
Once Shein approves the return, the refund notification goes to your email address on file. If you chose Wallet credit, the funds appear almost immediately. If you chose a card refund, the notification confirms the refund has been initiated and your bank will process it from there.
If 15 business days pass after Shein confirms receipt and your refund has not arrived, that is the right time to contact customer service with your return tracking number and order details.
